War Paint

Revelations 12:11 NIV

"They triumphed over him by the blood of the lamb and by the word of their testimony; they did not love their lives so much as to shrink from death."

When I was younger, I mean bitty league softball younger, we used to put black paint under our eyes before every game. I can remember walking up and down the aisles of the sports section at Wal-Mart with my dad, who was our softball coach, until we found a tube of what looked like black lipstick. From that point on, all of us early adolescent girls marked up our faces with what we thought was our war paint, as if it had defined our strength. Now, I will say, we did win quite a few games, but I don't believe that it had anything to do with our black-painted faces. But as I began to read Revelation 12, where Michael and his Heavenly angels break out into battle with the dragon and his angels, I can't help but picture Michael and his angels gearing up for war the way we geared up for our bitty league softball games. Instead of painting their faces with black sports paint, though, I can see them taking the Holy blood of Jesus and painting their faces in a similar manner. Here's the difference, though: My black face paint didn't define my strength like I thought it did. Our victories over our opponents weren't because of the black smears on the tops of our cheeks. The blood of Christ, however, is what gives us victory over the enemy. And when we are focused on reflecting the life of Christ in our own, loving Him with our whole hearts and devoting our lives to Him instead of living for the world, then we will find that there isn't a battle that we can't win through Christ.
