Who's the Commander of Your Army?
2 Chronicles 20:15 NIV
"...This is what the Lord says to you: 'Do not be afraid or discouraged because of this vast army. For the battle is not yours, but God's.' "
As I reflect on my teens and early twenties, I can see a trend of struggle. Though I have seen hard times, I can honestly sit here and say that the Lord has never let my enemies defeat me. However, I have noticed that some fights were much harder than they should've been. Why? Because I tried to fight them on my own out of fear. When Jehoshaphat king of Judah caught wind that there was a vast army heading for them from Edom, he was alarmed. However, the scripture tells us that though he was alarmed, he inquired of the Lord right away about what he should do. He then ordered a fast for all of Judah (V. 3). Because of his desire to consult with the Lord on what his next step as king would be, the Spirit of the Lord came down on Jahaziel, a man standing in the assembly Jehoshaphat had called together, and he proclaimed to the King his next steps saying, "This is what the Lord says to you: 'Do not be afraid or discouraged because of this vast army. For the battle is not yours, but God's.' (V.15)"
You see, we can get worked up, discouraged, and even fearful about our present situations, but all that will do is weaken us. However, we are encouraged to allow God to fight our battles for us. When we allow God to be our commander, he will guide our steps and line us up for victory. The only way we can achieve this victory, however, is through our obedience to God. If we are fighting his every move, we will complicate the situation far worse than it ever needed to be. Jahaziel reminded King Jehoshaphat that he would not have to fight this battle against the Moabites and Ammonites as long as he remained still and trusted God. Can you imagine how much easier our victories would be if we just allowed God to fight our battle for us? Our Father in Heaven isn't asking us to gather an army of a million men and kill our enemies with our bare hands. No, he is simply asking us to trust him. It is crucial to remember that the God fighting our battles is the God who knows every move our enemies will make before they even make it.
