When Peer Pressure Strikes
1 Samuel 15:24-26 NIV: "Then Saul said to Samuel, 'I have sinned. I have violated the Lord's command and your instructions. I was afraid of the men and so I gave into them. Now I beg you, forgive my sin and come back with me, so that I may worship the Lord.' But Samuel said to him, 'I will not go back with you. You have rejected the word of the Lord, and the Lord has rejected you as king over Israel."
In the book of 1 Samuel, King Saul found himself face to face with peer pressure and in return, he was rejected as the king over Israel by the Lord. Because he chose to look good in the eyes of man, instead of doing good in the eyes of the Lord, he was punished greatly. Now, since the first coming of Jesus Christ, we serve a more forgiving God. We have been offered the gift of salvation that King Saul and his men never saw. But nonetheless, if we aren't careful about who we let influence us, we could find ourselves in situations where our actions don't honor God.
I can't even begin to express how important it is that we are careful about who we let into our circle. When we run with the wrong crowd, we may begin to see ourselves acting in ways in which we normally wouldn't. In turn, this behavior could lead to sin. Proverbs 13:20 NIV says it best, "Walk with the wise and become wise, for a companion of fools suffers harm." If we subject ourselves to people who make poor life choices, we run the risk of those choices becoming contagious, and we will find ourselves face to face with peer pressure.
