It's What's on the Inside that Counts
1 Samuel 16:7
"But the Lord said to Samuel, "Do not consider his appearance or his height, for I have rejected him. The Lord does not look at the things people look at. People look at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart."
Today, more than ever, people strive to be the prettiest, strongest, best-looking person they can be. It is these very things that, unfortunately, seem to determine our value to others. We may look at someone and think to ourselves, "Wow, they've got it all! Their hair is perfect. Their body is in shape. They wear the cutest outfits. Their makeup is always perfect!" While it's nice to think good things about other people, this type of thinking tends to lead to us feeling worse about ourselves in return. For example, we may think that someone's got the prettiest hair, but when we look at ours, it lacks in comparison. If we're not careful, this can end in one of two ways: 1. We feel bad about ourselves because we don't look like them, or 2. We try to become more like them and less like ourselves.
As you can tell from 1 Samuel 16:7, it was never supposed to be this way. In fact, it doesn't matter what you look like. You don't have to pretty yourself up and become someone you're not in order to impress God. God made you exactly who you are for a reason, and that reason serves a greater purpose than your outward appearance. God sees you for who you are on the inside. He sees your heart. He sees you for your inner beauty. We weren't meant compete for outward beauty; let the beauty queens run their race and you run yours. Whose opinion of you matters most, God's, or people's?
