"Sticks and Stones May Break My Bones"
Proverbs 11:9 NIV
"With their mouths the godless destroy their neighbors, but through knowledge the righteous escape."
When I was a little girl, I can remember my dad reciting to me the old "sticks and stones" saying that pretty much everyone knows by heart. If you don't fall into the category of people who know it, it goes as follows: "Sticks and stones may break my bones, but words will never hurt me." His purpose behind singing this little phrase was to try to toughen me up after someone had said some unkind things to or about me. In a way, he wasn't wrong. Oftentimes, people choose to use words as weapons because of their effectiveness in tearing others down. You see when people say hurtful to us, or about us, those things are usually untrue in the first place. When there is no truth behind someone's talk, it makes their words empty and meaningless. Kind of like a faulty bomb that doesn't go off, or a gun with no ammo in it.
It is in these situations that God goes to battle for us. He is truth and fills those empty, ugly, meaningless words with truth... but not the truth the enemy had in mind; He fills their lies with his truth. Throughout the Bible, you will see God speaking truth into every single one of the enemy's lies. This is where diving into the word of God and knowing what He says is crucial. If we don't know what the truth is, it will be easy to believe the lies the enemy tells us. When we live righteously and are well aware of what God says about us, then our attackers have no leverage in this battle. However, if we are rooted in the word, God will go out before us and fight on our behalf. We need only to be still and believe.
