How Long Will You Waver?

1 Kings 18:21 NIV

"Elijah went before the people and said, 'How long will you waver between two opinions? If the Lord is God, follow him; but if Baal is God, follow him.' But the people said nothing."

In the Old Testament, the Israelites struggled horribly at staying faithful to God, and only God. They were constantly turning their back on God and worshiping idols and other gods. Elijah, being the last of the Lord's prophets, bravely stood before the people of Israel and gave this speech. He called out the Israelites on their unfaithfulness to God, and faithfulness to Baal. He basically said, "Either you worship God, or you worship Baal, but you can't do both." Exodus 20:3 tells us, "You shall have no other gods before me." This was presented to us as one of the ten commandments.

Today, the idea of worshiping other gods is much less tempting to the modern Christian. However, there are many things we may be tempted to worship above God. Though they may not be "gods" specifically, when we desire and rely on them before our God, we fall victim to the sin of idolization. Earthly things can become and obsession, and in turn, we may put our faith in material things and not God. Things like social media, cell phones, money, even our jobs and hobbies can go from seemingly harmless, to faith damaging in an instant. It is when we put our faith and desire into these things on earth, that we begin to waver. We cannot put our faith into the ways of the world and God at the same time. We've got to pick. We must constantly put God first and have faith in him as our one and only God. If you find that something has become an obsession in your life, odds are it has become an idol. When this happens, take a step back and ask God to show you where you can improve. Ask him how you can devote more of your time and faith into him, and less into the ways of the world.
