When the Waves Come Crashing

2 Corinthians 4:8-10 NIV

"We are hard pressed on every side, but not crushed; perplexed, but not in despair; persecuted, but not abandoned; struck down, but not destroyed. We always carry around in our body the death of Jesus, so that the life of Jesus may be revealed in our body."

It's amazing how so many times in my life I have felt like I have beaten to the point of breaking, used until I felt I no longer had worth, condemned and unloved by the ones I loved the most. I have seen the intense waves of life come crashing down around me with force, but they've never once touched me. Somehow, though it's never been easy to understand, I've lived to see every trial I've faced walk right back out the same door it came in. There's only one person to thank for all of these victories and that is Jesus himself.

It isn't about who I am that made me lucky enough to see these victories come to pass. On the contrary, there's not a single thing I have ever done to deserve his love for me. As children of God, we are chosen witnesses of the life and death of Jesus Christ (Acts 10:39). We are to understand what it means to be a disciple of the Lord and actively reflect his life through our own. Jesus faced condemnation, he faced trial, he faced persecution, and he faced it all knowing that people couldn't affect his destiny. We may never know why we are facing such things, but we can be sure that by allowing the Lord to fight our battles for us we will be safe from harm and destruction. While trial and affliction may be inevitable, God always holds a greater purpose for our suffering. We may see Jesus' death to be unfair and sad, but his death had a greater purpose than just hanging from a cross. He paved the way for all humanity to have a share of his inheritance.

Are you allowing the waves of whatever you're going through right now sweep you away, or are you allowing God to control them?
