Know Your Worth
Matthew 10:29-31 NIV
"Are not two sparrows sold for a penny? Yet not one of them will fall to the ground outside your Father's care. And even the very hairs on your head are all numbered. So don't be afraid; you are worth more than many sparrows."
Have you ever felt like you've slipped into a rut where no one just seems to notice you? You take the time to say, "hi," to someone and they don't even care to look at you and respond. You go out of your way to make others happy, but the same genuine behavior isn't expressed in return. Or you might even find yourself being left out of a group and you're just not even sure why. Consequently, all of these instances can leave us feeling sad, hopeless and searching for our own self-worth. It's easy to get discouraged and start pointing out all of your flaws. However, our worth isn't found in people and their opinions. Our worth is found in the Lord.
Jesus called his twelve together to prepare them to be sent out to "gather the lost sheep of Israel," (Matthew 10:6). In his speech, he expressed to them what is written in verses 29-31. He knew that as they set out to proclaim his message, "The kingdom of heaven has come near," (v.7), they would be faced with persecution, condemnation and suffering. That there may be times when they felt like their worth was nonexistent, and maybe even contemplate moving forward with their mission. He encouraged them by saying that the one who stood firm to the end would be saved (v.22). It doesn't matter what people do to us. Neither peoples' opinions, nor actions, will ever determine our worth. Our worth is determined by our Father in Heaven. Just as he takes care of the sparrows of the sky, though they be worth no more than a penny, he will take care of you and I no matter what people do or say to us. For he knows the number of hairs on our heads and loves every last one of them.
