What Are You Wearing?
Romans 13:14 NIV
"Rather, clothe yourselves with the Lord Jesus Christ, and do not think about how to gratify the desires of the flesh."
When I got my first job at sixteen, working the drive-thru window at our local McDonald's, I was eager to start. I thought it would be so fun to get to pick which red or white uniform I'd wear each day. Then, when I moved on to healthcare, I was happy to trade in my black slacks and McDonald's ball cap for ten pairs of the same blue scrubs. When I began my journey in banking, I started out at a corporate bank that required dress pants and a fun variety of business casual tops that had the logo sewn into the top corner of them. My point here is this: Whatever we choose to clothe ourselves with, typically reflects what we represent. If you wear a uniform for work, then it usually has the work logo on it. Though some places and positions have restrictions on what we can and can't wear, there is something we can always clothe ourselves in that represents much more that the physical clothing we wear.
When we choose to clothe ourselves in the Lord, we are choosing to wear what represents Jesus to the fullest. Wearing things like love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control (fruit of the spirit Galatians 5:22) not only reflects the life of our savior but combats the evil desires within the flesh. On the contrary, when we wear things like carousing and drunkenness, sexual immortality and debauchery, and dissension and jealousy we are feeding what is evil in our flesh (V.13). Representing such things will damage your relationship with Christ, lead you to sin and potentially sabotage your destiny. Our destiny is far more important than walking around misrepresenting ourselves with the ugly fashion of the flesh. The Apostle Paul warns us all in his letter to the Romans that the time for Jesus to come again is closer than we think (v.11). If we are not proactive today about what we choose to wear, then we may miss out destiny and not see the eternal life that Christ died to give us.
