How Strong is Your Belief?

Mark 9:24 NIV

"Immediately the boy's father exclaimed, 'I do believe; help me to overcome my unbelief!' "

A common problem I have run into while talking to other Christians has been their struggle with unbelieving. Yes, they believe in Jesus, but there are doubts from time to time. For example, they believe in Jesus, but also believe that there is no hope for their problems. When a father came forward wanting help for his son, who had been possessed by an evil spirit from a young age, he too was a bit unbelieving. He knew Jesus had performed healings and banished impure spirits before, but I think he had a hard time believing that he would do it for him. Most times, we tend to look at our situation as being much bigger than we can handle. But just because it's too big for us to handle, doesn't mean Jesus can't. The Bible explicitly portrays story after story of Jesus healing the sick, the blind, the possessed, and even raising people from the dead. We've even seen his healing hands work miracles in other people's lives firsthand. Surely, then, if he has done these things for others, he will do them for you.

Could you imagine what Jesus could do for us if we simply and undoubtedly believed in him? Refusing to have the same, "Well, I believe, but..." mentality that we're used to having? Jesus then told this boy's father, after discovering his doubt that, "Everything is possible for one who believes." (V.23). Then, he backed his statement up by rebuking the spirit within the boy that had tried to kill him for years. Trust me, it is hard to believe without a doubt in someone you can't see; but believing isn't about seeing. If you are finding yourself in a place where you believe in Jesus, but still have your doubts, the best thing you could do is to do what the boy's father did... Ask Jesus to help you overcome your unbelief. Little by little, trial by trial, you will find it getting easier to believe fully in the Lord.
