How Deep is God's Love?
John 3:16-17 NIV
"For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him."
I love John 3:16 so much, and I thought it would be fitting that we start out this Holy Week with a scripture on love. I talked about this a little bit in my sermon on Saturday, but I really wanted to drive home this idea in one of our Daily Thoughts. Often times, when we look at the death of Jesus, sadness comes to mind. Many wept at the foot of the cross on the day of his crucifixion, and rightfully so because his death was not only innocent, but brutal. However, Jesus' death wasn't meant to bring us sadness. On the contrary, it was meant to bring us joy. Why? Because it was done out of love! Not only out of Jesus' love for us, but out of God's love too.
John 3:16 tell us that God loved us so much and longed to be in relationship with us so deeply, that he sent his one and only son to die on the cross and wipe away our sins, so that we could see eternity with him. God's love for us is so deep that he was willing to send his son to this earth to be the human sacrifice that would save us from eternal damnation, thus hindering us from being in relationship with our one true God. Many have been deceived into thinking that Jesus was sent to condemn us for our sins. To reprimand us for our wrongdoings. Often times, this misconception drives people away from the faith. We can see in the scriptures written by the Apostle John, though, that this quite the opposite. We will never find a love greater than the love of the Lord. While human love can be flawed, occasionally laced with anger, hatred, ill-intentions and selfishness, this isn't the love we see from our God. His love is pure, deep and generous and he wants nothing more than for us to be in constant, loving relationship with him.
