There's Nothing to Fear
Psalm 56:3 NIV
"When I am afraid, I put my trust in you. In God, whose word I praise- in God I trust and am not afraid. What can mere mortals do to me?"
Our oldest daughter came out of the bedroom last night and asked my husband if he would lay with her until she fell asleep. When he asked her why, because she normally goes to sleep on her own, she said that she was afraid of the dark. Naturally, my husband's response was, "well what's going to get you in the dark that can't get you in the daylight?" He's a tough-love kind of parent. But as someone whose only real fears are swimming in water other than a swimming pool, bugs with sticky feet, and the dark, I piped up with my testimony in an attempt to plead her case. I explained to my husband that, at least in my case, fear of the dark isn't what can or cannot get you in the dark, but the fear of being blindsided. When it's dark, your sense of sight is limited. If you cannot see, you are vulnerable to an attack. If you've seen at least one horror film in your lifetime, odds are, something bad has happened in the dark. But while I've heard that same phrase that my husband said to our daughter, over and over throughout the years-and hated it every single time someone said it-he's right. And here's why: If we have faith, then we believe that God is in control. And if something bad does happen to us, God will work it out for good. Therefore, we should have no fear, but full confidence in God. Even in the thought of death, we should still stand firm in our faith because we know that we have the promise of Heaven. That, my friends, is the promise of paradise! So, while we may walk around in fear on this earth, I want to encourage you to take a moment to evaluate what it is about your fears that you're really afraid of, and what our God says about them. There's nothing so scary on this earth that our God cannot overcome on our behalf.
