My God, My Lighthouse
Psalm 43:3 NIV
"Send me your light and your faithful care, let them lead me; let them bring me to your holy mountain, to the place where you dwell."
Lighthouses have been used for many years as a form of navigation system for sailors on the open waters. The first lighthouse built in the United States was built in 1716 to shine light across the sea to help ships find their way. Today, many are equipped with horns that help sailors maneuver through foggy waters on their way to their destination. Similarly, 1 John 1:5 tells us that God is light, and in him, there is no darkness. When a sailor sees the light amidst the dark waters coming from a nearby lighthouse, he is better able to find his way back to his original course.
We, too, will find ourselves lost time and time again among the dark waves of this life. Just as a sailor needs a lighthouse to redirect his course, we Christians need a lighthouse to guide us back to our intended paths as we sail towards our destination: eternal life. God is our light. He is our lighthouse because, in him, there is no darkness. Like a lighthouse shines its light and sounds its horn for lost ships, he too sends out his light and his truth to guide and direct us when we've become lost. If we will follow his loving guidance, just as a sailor follows the guidance of the lighthouse, we will sail victoriously into our final destination: eternity.
