Who Do You Think Jesus Is?
Matthew 16:15 NIV
" 'But what about you?' he asked. 'Who do you say I am?' "
Growing up, it was nearly impossible to take my younger brother anywhere with me without people telling me that I had an adorable son. My brother, now much bigger than I, is close to ten years my younger. Though only sixteen or seventeen, heavy make-up added years to my appearance. People constantly gave me these "compliments" because they didn't know who I really was. They believed that I was his mother, but when I revealed my true identity as his sister, they were shocked. When Jesus was born, things weren't what they seemed. There was nothing special about his mother. Mary was a common woman. His earthly father, Joseph, was a carpenter. How could the Mesiah come from a family of little significance? When Jesus asked his disciples who people though the Son of Man was, they said to him, "Some say John the Baptist; others say Elijah; and still others, Jeremiah or one of the prophets." (V. 14). But Jesus asked them another question that changed everything: "Who do you say I am?"
You see, it really didn't matter who other people thought I was in relation to my brother, because it didn't change the fact that I was his sister and not his mother. Likewise, it doesn't matter who other people believe the Mesiah is when we Christians know the truth. When we believe that Jesus is the Mesiah, the Son of God, he will bestow his gifts upon us. John 6:47 says, "Truly, truly, I say to you, he who believes has eternal life." Just as I revealed my identity to others, Jesus has revealed himself time and time again throughout the scriptures. It is up to us to worry about who WE believe he is and make him number one in our lives. Stand firm in your belief and don't let what other people think sway what you know is true.
