We Get the Best Seat in the House
Matthew 20:22-23 NKJV
"But Jesus answered and said, 'You do not know what you ask. Are you able to drink the cup that I am about to drink, and be baptized with the baptism that I am baptized with?' They said to Him, 'We are able.' So He said to them, 'You will indeed drink my cup, and be baptized by the baptism that I am baptized with; but to sit on my right hand and on my left is not mine to give, but it is for those for whom it is prepared by My Father.'"
A few weekends ago, my sister and two of our cousins went to the movies and out to eat for a little girl's day. We don't get together often with work and kids, but when we do, we always enjoy our time together. Before the outing, we had decided to go see "Where the Crawdads Sing," and one of my cousins had said she would order our tickets online ahead of time that way everything was paid for, and all we had to do was walk in and let them scan our virtual tickets. Easy enough! At the time, no one had purchased any tickets, so we were able to grab the best seats in the house. But once we walked into the movie theater, every seat was filled... including our seats. Though we bought our seats ahead of time, other people had decided to come in and take our seats, leaving us stuck in the front row (you know, so close that it hurts your neck after a while from looking up?). Though we were frustrated, we opted to not be confrontational and just take the seats we were dealt. Nonetheless, we still had a good time.
While this may be something you have encountered before, and believe me, I feel your frustration. I have some good news to share with you: No one's taking your seat in Heaven. You don't have to settle for the nosebleed seats or the neck-breaking front row. You're getting the best seat in the house, free of charge, purchased for you by Jesus Christ! You see, the scripture doesn't just tell us that our God knows us by name (Isaiah 43:1), but that we are His and He has a seat prepared especially for us that no one can take. Jesus explains this to the sons of Zebedee when they ask that they may be seated at His right hand and his left when they enter the kingdom of Heaven. And while Jesus knew that they would drink from the same cup of suffering and die in His name, He made it clear that their seats in the kingdom of Heaven could only be determined by our Father in Heaven. So, while people may steal our seats here on earth-be it in the cafeteria, the movie theater, or even a football game-our seats in Heaven have been predetermined by God. And let me tell Ya, He's not letting anyone steal them.
